Liquid bitumen waterproofing — properly, bitumen emulsion — is the brush-and-roller side of the bitumen family: water-based, cold-applied, no flame required. Applied correctly it delivers reliable damp-proofing and priming; applied to the wrong job it disappoints. Here is both the method and the honest scope.
Choosing the right emulsion
- Insucoat Rubber Base — rubberized emulsion for flexible protective coats and priming under membranes.
- Insucoat Water Base — general-purpose damp-proofing and curing membrane.
- Insuguard Rubber Base / Water Base — low-viscosity, deep-penetrating emulsions for damp-proofing foundations and buried surfaces.
Application, step by step
- Clean and sound surface — free of dust, oil and loose particles; cracks repaired. Slightly damp concrete is acceptable for water-based emulsions; standing water is not.
- Prime coat — dilute the first coat if the datasheet instructs, and work it firmly into the surface.
- Build coats — apply 2–3 full coats by brush, roller or airless spray, each at right angles to the previous, letting every coat dry to touch first (drying stretches in cold or humid weather).
- Protect the finish — buried coats should be backfilled with care; exposed coats are for temporary or light-duty protection only.

The honest scope: emulsion vs membrane
Emulsions excel as primers, damp-proof coats and protective layers. For roofs, basements under groundwater, tanks and anywhere with permanent water exposure, the primary layer must be a membrane — InsuGrand, InsuFort or the self-adhesive InsuStick — with the emulsion as its primer.
