The best bitumen membrane for a flat roof depends on one question: will the membrane stay exposed to the sun, or will it be covered by screed, tiles or insulation? Exposed roofs need a mineral- or foil-finished APP membrane that faces UV directly; covered roofs can use a plain-finished membrane protected by the layers above it. Everything else — thickness, reinforcement and modifier — follows from that.
For exposed flat roofs: mineral-finished APP
On a roof with no regular foot traffic, the membrane itself is the finished surface. Atactic Polypropylene (APP) modified membranes are the standard choice in hot climates because of their high softening point and UV stability.
- InsuGrand — Insutech’s flagship APP membrane on a non-woven polyester (PES) carrier, torch-applied, in thicknesses from 3 mm to 6 mm with mineral or foil finishes.
- InsuUltra and InsuExtra — heavy-duty APP grades for roofs that need extra reserve against weathering.

For covered roofs: protected APP systems
When the roof will carry screeds, tiles or a garden build-up, a plain-surfaced APP membrane such as InsuFort or InsuSol does the waterproofing while the covering does the protecting. The system for this case is detailed under non-exposed roof waterproofing.
For movement and cold: SBS membranes
Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) modified membranes stay elastic at low temperatures and tolerate structural movement — the right call for bridge decks, joints, and cold stores. InsuPrene and InsuBend are Insutech’s SBS workhorses.
For details and flame-free areas: self-adhesive
Around rooflights, timber decks and occupied buildings where a torch is unwelcome, self-adhesive SBS membranes like InsuStick bond without any open flame.
