EPS Construction Solutions

Geofoam Roadwork

EPS embankments over weak ground — highways, ramps and culvert covers built without waiting for settlement.

Geofoam Roadwork
The Solution

One System, Built to Work Together.

On soft soils, conventional embankments sink and wait — surcharge, settle, rebuild. EPS geofoam builds the same geometry at one percent of the weight, taking settlement out of the programme entirely.

Block fills carry roads over weak ground, protect culverts from overburden, and stand up ramps and abutments in weeks instead of seasons.

Where It's Used
  • Embankments on soft ground
  • Bridge approach ramps
  • Culvert and utility protection
  • Road widening against structures
  • Emergency and fast-track works

System Build-Up

Layer by Layer.

  1. 01

    Formation Preparation

The subgrade is trimmed and drainage measures installed.

  2. 02

    Bedding Layer

A sand blinding levels the formation for the first course.

  3. 03

    EPS Geofoam Fill

Blocks placed in interlocking courses form the embankment core.

  4. 04

    Load Distribution Slab

A reinforced slab spreads traffic loads into the fill.

  5. 05

    Pavement Build-Up

Base course and asphalt complete the running surface.

Key Benefits
01

No Settlement Wait

Weak ground barely feels the fill — construction proceeds immediately.

02

Engineered Load Paths

Density-rated blocks under a distribution slab carry highway loading.

03

Protects What's Below

Culverts and utilities live under a fraction of normal overburden.

04

Weeks, Not Seasons

Hand-placed blocks build ramps and embankments at remarkable speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this system.

Where is the Geofoam Roadwork system used?

It is typically used for embankments on soft ground, bridge approach ramps, culvert and utility protection, road widening against structures and emergency and fast-track works.

Which Insutech products are used for geofoam roadwork?

The recommended system is built with InsuBlock 25kg/m³, InsuBlock 30kg/m³, InsuBlock 35kg/m³ and InsuBlock 20kg/m³ — full details for each are on the recommended products cards on this page.

How is the system installed?

The system is installed in 5 stages: formation Preparation, bedding Layer, EPS Geofoam Fill, load Distribution Slab and pavement Build-Up. The system build-up section on this page illustrates the full sequence. An application video is also available above.

What are the main advantages of the geofoam roadwork system?

The key advantages are no Settlement Wait, engineered Load Paths and protects What's Below — each is explained in the Key Benefits section on this page.
